The stage is transformed into a boxing ring as the ensemble Ikarai take the audience into the tale of boxing legend Muhammad Ali.
The story of Ali and his epic fight against George Foreman in 1974, the ‘Rumble in the Jungle’, is thrillingly set to music by Ikarai. Blending classical music, jazz and audio samples of Ali’s charismatic speeches, the Dutch ensemble create a score that is rhythmic, gracious and honest.
Ikarai, consisting of violin, viola, cello, bass, piano and drums, uniquely blend the worlds of classical composition and improvisation into the soundtrack of a tale never previously told. While referring to the European classical tradition, their compositions highlight improvisation, interplay and spontaneity.
