HAYDN Quartet in B flat Op.50 No.1
LIGETI Quartet No.1 Metamorphoses nocturnes
BEETHOVEN Quartet in C sharp minor Op.131
Johannes Marmen and Ricky Gore violins, Bryony Gibson-Cornish viola and Steffan Morris cello
The Marmen Quartet are former holders of Sheffield-based Music in the Round’s ‘Bridge’ Quartet Residency and in 2018 won the prestigious Annual Royal Overseas League Competition. This recital begins with the first of Haydn’s Op.50 quartets, an enchanting work dedicated to the King of Prussia, himself an enthusiastic cellist. Ligeti’s masterful first quartet was completed in 1954, but owing to the political situation in Hungary was only premiered in 1958 in Vienna. Beethoven’s late quartets stand at the pinnacle of classical chamber music and, anecdotally, the Opus 131 quartet in C sharp minor was the composer’s own favourite.
